Ring Rank

PLEASE NOTE: Ring Rank & Wity have a new home! You can find his site (and Ring Rank)

Without doubt the combination of the Nurburg Gran Prix circuit with the Nordschliefe provides the ultimate circuit to master at least that is of a simulation of a real life circuit. Having said that is there a fantasy track that compares? Complex String in Gran Turismo 3 for instance scared the life out of thousands when the first map of it was shown yet today it can be run in a third of the time needed for the 24hr Ring. Until the day we have the southern section added and replacing the Gran Prix circuit or some genius produces the whole Mille Migra nothing else will come close to this the ultimate hot lap challenge.

Ring Rank is the place to find out just how well you know it, to learn from, to discuss with and do battle with other like minded gearheads.

All and any updates to rules whatever, the latest being in italics will be made in this the first post so no matter how big the thread gets this is the only essential post you need to read and occassionally revisit in order to join in.

What's needed.
**************
Obviously a copy of SCGT as it is the only sim where today the full 24 Ring can be raced on. A couple of simple downloads and the 24 hr ring add on, all of which you probably have already but if not then Crumbut hosts it here.

The Rules
*********
1/ One lap of the 24hr Nurburgring from a standing start.
2/ No modifying the car veh, adding of parts, tuning or driving aids. (Thus a truly level playing field for all.)
3/ 100% clean only i.e. two wheels on the road or rumble strip at all times (or directly above if the car is airborne)
4/ Run solo as a 1 lap race. (To ensure pole position and it keeps replays pretty managable at around 1 meg)
5/ Contact with any fixed advertising hoarding, barriers or the like will deem the run void.
6/ Dont bother with the Advanced Options Editor or set it to normal.
7/ Set the tyre wear settings to 1*
8/ Ensure speed compensation is set to off (and allow modified car is on (otherwise you end up with the wrong final gear)
9/ As soon as you have finished your run hit F12 to take a screenshot, exit the race and rename the VCR file. Exit the game and zip up the VCR and the 'grab' from SCGT main folder.
Do not rename, modify, resize, etc., the screen grab in any way.
10/ Most important: Practice till you drop but quit if it becomes a chore. This is for fun, serious fun perhaps but it's not work.

Definition of an off.
****************
Where it can be shown from a photo that a tyre is partially on the track no matter how partially, then it is on the track. The track being the tarmacadum surface ending at the very outer edge of a rumble strip, a white line, where a white line exists, a dotted white line, where one exists and the tarmacadum where a white line does not exist.
Use of the tarmac to the left of the dotted white line near the very end of the Nordschleife circuit although used in real life racing is out of bounds for the Ring Rank.

Submissions
***********
(Unlimited attempts.Unlimited submissions. Unlimited deadline.) By email please to the addy at the foot of this post.State wether your using a wheel, a pad, anolog or digital or keyboard I'll indicate such in the leaderboard. Send a replays and a screen shot showing the time please wherever possible although for those who cannot record them your time will be accepted just not verified.

Leader board
************
Replays will prove a run to be 100% clean or not and will be included in the leaderboard where drivers name is underlined.

Suspect times
************
If theres a time in the leaderboard you think is suspicious please just tell me backchannel and I'll do my best to investigate it. As for vehicles being tuned or modded there are anticheat programs we could use but we have not needed them to date although the use of such remains an option.

Ring Rank
*********
The benchmark of 8:30.00 has now been set for the 917 The original Ring Rank car. Add your Ring Rank to your signature if you like simply as RRA-06.12 for example. Simlar to the GPL rank some of you may already use.

Screenshots
***********
Dont bother posting screen shot of times here in the thread. Take one and mail it with a replay as per rule 9 to help with verification but posting them is a waste really as the picture itself proves nothing.

The car to use
************
Not many to choose from really is there?
This may not be the prettiest, it may not be even to your liking, it certainly is no slouch, but it'll sort the men from the boys no doubt.

Dont use the version you may already have, use this one as the veh is different and its a low polygon count complete with newly added more authentic grey wheels. Soft tyres and a 10 gallon tank are already set so it just get in and floor the loud pedal.

The first ever Porsche to win Le-Mans, the 1970 917k driven by Hans Herrmann and my fellow Wulfrunian and ex Gran Turismo gearhead Richard Attwood. aka Ziggy

Hope you enjoy it, it's a tad slippery.

Click for a red and white winged dash now available at the Rock

Struggling ? Get Geeti's Ring trainer hosted over at Red Bulls.

Well the Porsche was Alpha, this is Bravo, and Charlie and Delta are yet to come. Finally decided on 4 cars each with a totally different character in the 4 classes of the exe. Charlie wont turn up for a month or so as there's no hurry.

The site will show tables covering all submitted times. I'll probably trim hosting the replays to just the top three of each class but please continue to submit them for verification.

This 1958 Ferrari Dino we hope you will find very different from the Porsche. There's a fair bit of research gone into the veh by Porsche Guy who has also made the dash in with the zip.

Get it from the Ring Rank site as anywhere else will have a different veh and as with the Porsche, no modifying or tuning:

And then there is the very fast Rothmans Porsche..

Last and probably the best drive of all...

Well so ok, it wasn't the last but you cant get enough of a good thing can you?

Edit...

IS THE RING RANK DEAD?

Nah, you wanna have a shot with a Morgan Surely?

Although the veh is finished the car is not so till some kind heart does it for us get it here...

Is the Advanced Options Editor being used (Uhmmmmm, I don't use it ) Stock setting are fine with me

and can I use the Steilstrecke part (that cuts off the Karussell, once I get it into the game) to help improve my presumeably miserable times

I've not installed the A.O.E. myself but for those that use it just set it to normal so all are on the same level.

As for the Steilstrecke part I dunno the track well enough yet to know where you mean but I know you well enough, the answer is NO!

Wity,

Since we're not allowed to change any aero, suspension, drivetrain, etc. settings, how does the 917K drive (oversteer, understeer, loose under heavy braking, ???) I've only been driving well tuned 1999+ 911's and other Porsche prototypes. Any help would be appreciated before I turn this car into scrap at the Ring.

It's a natural thing that folks take a car and bolt on all the goodies fiddle around with the tuning, get the car to stick to the deck like glue and then go for a personal best. Nothing wrong with that but if I have just described you then methinks your in for a shock. I't's not that the car handles badly, I altered very little within the veh but the only bolt on is a 6th gear and as for grip I reduced that a fair bit so for starters imagine its a cold winters morning your first out on the track and the weather forcast was to be wary of lots of black ice about.

ROFL!

Maybe if I can get a time in quick, I may be on the leaderboard while we wait for 10 others...

Ahhh, I see my persona carries over well online

...and I'm having a little trouble abiding by the "Contact..." part of the rules (darn Armco!) ...and how do barrel-rolls fit into the scoring??? Do we get style points??? ALL my runs have been disqualified!!!

What is the Target Time?

I set a low 6 minuite lap (can't remember what) with the 917K, not setup, wear X1.

Is that good?

Nice job on the vehicle edit, Wity!

The car is loose as a goose, but it handles beautifully. Good balance. However, it's so loose, it's like learning to drive all over again! LoL

I'm having lots of trouble just keeping it on the road! I'm a long ways from rdufton's 6 minute lap.

I think you're right. It will separate the men from the boys.

Mc62YearOldToddler.

One question though. What should wear be set at? I'm currently using 2X wear.

Sorry low 7 Minuites I'd love to lap it in low 6 minuites.

I must remember to switch my Brain on but not having slept for 2 days and 3 hours a night sleep does that to you.

At least I have Simracing to cheer me up and I love the Veh It is a lot of fun when your smoking the tires out of the Corners.

That'a relief! It's still an excellent time. You should go race roush.

I'm still a long way behind you. Best I've done is in the low 8 minute range. And the laps were neither legal nor clean. Too many offs and clipped a couple of corners.

I'm still pussy footing through a lot of the corners. After I get a better feel for the car, I should be in the high 7s. Still a long way behind.

Does #1 Ring Rank become a Ring Rathe?

I agree with McGregor...this car is a kick to drive!! It's nice to be able to recover from a slide without going round in circles...

That being said, I managed a 7:18, but totally spaced & forgot to take a screenie... And I don't even have the excuse of lack of sleep - just brainfade...

Back to the track!

talk of low 7's I Cant get under 10:00 here !

I've not used my wheel yet though just been grabbing my digital joypad for ease as I have been installing so much the clamping on and off of the wheel is a bit of a pain. Right now I have screwed up something big time, every exe is dumping me to the desktop without even an error message no matter how low the graphics are set.

There is no target time as such, you need a good driver to know whats possible and that for sure is not me.

I cant wait to see some of these runs, theres no better way to learn than to watch. Get them over to me anytime I'll host them no problem.

Tyre wear setting is up to you. I suppose 1* is best though.

Anything I have missed out such as tyre wear settings I'll update the first post.

Something to watch out for is AOE.

If you're like me, you'll alternate between AOE=Pure Sim and AOE=Original. AOE will remove the "[Parts]" tag. If you suddenly find yourself driving a 5 speed, you've been "AOE'ed". <g> Restore the .veh file from the zip.

The fix for that is to right click on the filename (GS3gsba.veh), select "Properties" and click the "Read-only" attribute. Then AOE won't change the file in any way.

Some cars are also released with AOE applied. I don't know if AOE will restore those settings, but the fix is the same. Set the vehicle file to read-only.

@Randolator: You ain't no nupid stewbie (nice line!). I'm almost a minute behind you. LoL Nice time! Get the SS and save the replay. I _will_ be D/L'ing it!

In the meantime, you and rdufton can go race roush! I'll be there now and again, too. Tomorrow (Saturday) is Portland in GTQ with AOE on and all mods.

Wity, you are going to have to loosen the rules up a bit mate!!! I got stuck the wrong side of the armco after a particular bad off and couldn't get back across, no matter how many Steve McQueen attempts at jumping it I made.

I got a 9.16 in one of the original ISI GT3 Porsche's (the 917 wouldn't d/l for me yesterday) but Idon't know the track yet.

Surely #1 would be A Ring Master.

For Me it just flows Naturaly as I can remember the layouts of most if not all SCGT tracks, like Rainman remembers phone numbers I remember Corners as I was once told.

And on another note can I have a 4 or 3 speed 917K as they weren't allowed to use 1st just to make it interesting.

Edit is I'm using a Joystick.

Cool

Nah...#1 would HAVE to be the Lord of the 'Ring...(In a purely good way, of course! )

McGregor...just a stewbie on this forum...I've been lurking around Speedsims and High Gear for a while - trying not to cause too much chaos & confusion....

As for the D/L...I'm still on a dial-up - tying up the phone for that long is gonna p*** off the missus...but we'll see...

Here is a replay of the south circuit (the only replay I have ).

I Started braking at the 150m board at the Veedol Chicane for some reason and I boogered up the first corner on the north circuit and then hit an Invisable wall?

I did this to show some people how to do the South Circuit.

Does anybody have a decent dash for the car? I hate the default dash, but need a dash to get my bearins-or what ever...I have tried Big Ben but didn't see a 917 dash. Any help or a pointer to where to look would be appreciated. NOTE BIG BEN IS TAKING DOWN THE SCGT STUFF ON THE 18TH OF DECEMBER...PER A NOTICE ON HIS SITE.....

I looked for one as I wanted to put up a car that would appeal to all but to no avail, nothing stopping you using any dash you like though.

OK...So I managed a 6:56.65, and I think it's legal...from looking at the replay at least 2 wheels were on the racing surface (Or rumble strip) at all times, although there were a couple of dicey bits...

I really like this car, and I LOVE this track!
